Benefits affected by the cap

The benefit cap is a limit on the total amount of benefit you can get while receiving Housing Benefit or Universal Credit. It applies to most people aged 16 or over who have not reached State Pension age.

You can find out more information about the benefit cap here

If you get more than the limit suitable for your circumstances, your benefits will be reduced.

The money you receive in benefits before the Benefit Cap applies depending on:

  •          Where you live
  •          If you’re single
  •          If you have children living in your household and you are responsible for them

Your circumstances might mean that Benefit Cap may not apply to you, so it’s always important to check.
