Only residents whose landlord is a partner with us can join House Exchange

What are the benefits of joining?

When you register your details with House Exchange you will be able to advertise your home and search for that ideal home swap. With thousands of users registered already, there are plenty of opportunities available to relocate anywhere in the UK.

By becoming a member you will gain access to all the features available. We have a range of tools designed to help you manage your advert, such as a description editor, unlimited in-house messaging and a to-do list to help you make the most of your account.

The platform proactively matches potential properties which means you will receive notifications as soon as they become available.

Can anyone join?

All council, registered social housing and co-operative tenants who hold a secure, assured, fixed term or contractual tenancy are potentially eligible for mutual exchange.

If you have an introductory tenancy you do not have the right to mutual exchange, you should check with your landlord to find out what type of tenancy you have and if you have the right to swap.

We have more information on eligible tenancies here.

Bear in mind that the place that you want to swap with has to suit your needs. A landlord may not agree to an exchange if this means that you will be overcrowded in your new home or if you will have more bedrooms than needed.

You may also need to have a clear rent account when you are ready to swap homes.

I don't have access to the internet?

House Exchange is primarily an online service.

If you don't have access to the internet via your own mobile phone, handheld device, personal notebooks or desktop computer there are other options available.

In order to create and access an account online with House Exchange you can ask a friend or family member to register your details on your behalf. They could help manage your account for you by searching for matches and messaging other residents.

Once your account has been set up, you can also access your account at the following locations as they may have internet access:

  • At your local library and education centers
  • In Internet cafes and coffee shops
  • At your place of work

It is also worthwhile to see if your landlord is able to support you with the above.

If your landlord is a partner of House Exchange they have the option of registering you with an offline account which they would manage on your behalf. In this situation, it's important to make sure your landlord has the facilities to do this.

How long is my account active for?

We want to take a moment to update you that the use of the House Exchange platform will be coming to an end on the 31 July 2026.

If your landlord is a partner, your account will remain active until the closure 31 July 2026.
If you have already paid a membership fee this will expire on the 31 July 2026 or the renewal date whichever is the earliest date.
